Operative Units LA, O1–O5, O8 (with optional O6 Hot Lay) 

This comprehensive 5‑day NRSWA Street Works Operative course provides new and existing operatives with the essential skills and knowledge required to carry out street works safely and to national standards. Covering key units including Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (LA), Signing, Lighting & Guarding (O1), Excavation (O2), Reinstatement of Sub‑Base and Base (O3), Reinstatement of Cold‑Lay Bituminous Materials (O4), and Footways & Modular Surfaces (O5), the course ensures operatives are fully prepared for real‑world site conditions. Unit O8, covering Reinstatement of Concrete Surfaces, is also included to provide a complete skill set.

Learners gain hands‑on experience through practical assessments supported by clear theoretical guidance, ensuring they understand how to work safely, protect the public, and comply with the New Roads and Street Works Act.

An additional Hot Lay Asphalt module (Unit O6) is available for those who require training in the use of hot bituminous materials.

This course is ideal for anyone entering the street works industry or renewing their skills to meet current legislation and industry expectations.

New Roads & Street Works (NRSWA) training is in line with The New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, which places a duty on any person or organisation undertaking work involving the installation, renewal, maintenance or inspection of underground apparatus in any street or road to ensure that work is under the control of competent persons.

Our internal, fully qualified and occupationally competent assessors work to the HAUC Specifications.

Regulation

Anyone working on the highway should hold a Street Works card although the minimum regulation set is that there must be at least one qualified operative and one supervisor on any active site.

Course Completion 

All successful candidates will leave with a Street Works Certificate and Card along with being registered to the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR).

Pre-course Requirements

There are no awarding body pre course requirements however it is strongly recommended that a individual has 18months – 2 year’s experience prior to enrolling for this course.
