How much does NRSWA training cost?

Question Answer

NRSWA training cost depends on the units, the route (single unit, full Operative, Supervisor or renewal), the group size and whether delivery is at our centre or on-site. Single-unit courses (Cat & Genny, SLG) are the cheapest option. Full Operative courses are the most expensive. CITB Levy-registered employers can usually grant-recover most NRSWA training.

Key facts

  • Single-unit courses (Cat & Genny, SLG) are the cheapest. Typically 1 day per unit.
  • Renewal courses sit at the lower end. Short refresh plus retest per unit, batched across multiple units.
  • Full Operative courses are the most expensive. 3–5 days covering Units 1, 2 and the common reinstatement units.
  • Supervisor courses sit in the middle. 2–3 days for a typical S-unit set.
  • On-site delivery reduces operator travel and downtime; group bookings cut the per-head cost.
  • CITB Levy-registered employers can usually grant-recover most NRSWA training.

What drives the price of NRSWA training?

Six factors set the cost of any NRSWA course:

  • Unit count. The biggest single driver. A 1-day Cat & Genny course is materially cheaper than a 5-day full Operative course covering five units.
  • Route. A renewal is shorter than a new-candidate full Operative block, even on the same unit set, because the underpinning theory does not need to be re-taught from scratch.
  • Operative versus Supervisor. Supervisor assessment is set at a higher level and the course content is slightly different; pricing reflects that.
  • Group size. Booking three or more operatives together lowers the per-head cost. Instructor and assessment day costs are shared across the group.
  • Delivery location. On-site delivery at the employer’s yard or project removes operator travel and accommodation costs. Centre-based delivery at Cannock removes the travel-to-site cost on the MPTT side.
  • CITB Levy status. If your company pays the CITB Levy, most NRSWA training is grant-recoverable. The grant materially reduces the net cost for Levy-registered employers.

Single-unit, full Operative, Supervisor, renewal: what changes between routes

The route the operative or supervisor is on is the second biggest cost lever after the unit count.

  • Single unit. 1-day course covering Cat & Genny or SLG. Cheapest option per unit. Use for top-ups when the operative already holds the other units they need.
  • Full Operative course. 3–5 days covering Units 1, 2 and one or more reinstatement units (typically Units 3, 4 and 6). Highest per-attendance cost but lowest cost per unit, because the underpinning content is shared.
  • Supervisor course. 2–3 days covering S1, S2, the S-equivalent reinstatement units the supervisor oversees, plus S10 and S11. Mid-range cost.
  • Renewal. 1 day per unit, batched. Lower cost than a new-candidate course on the same units because the underpinning is condensed.

On-site delivery and group bookings

Per-head training cost falls quickly as group size rises. The biggest cost in any NRSWA course is instructor time and the SQA assessment day, both of which are shared across the group. For employers training three or more operatives or supervisors together, on-site delivery at your own yard or project is often cheaper than sending people to our Cannock centre. No travel, no accommodation, no lost site days, and operatives train in the working environment they will return to. We deliver NRSWA training on-site across England. Send us the units, the operative and supervisor count and the postcode, and we will quote both on-site and centre-based options.

CITB Levy: when training is grant-recoverable

If your company is registered with the CITB and pays the Levy, the CITB Grant Scheme covers most NRSWA training (Operative, Supervisor, and most renewals). Grant rates are published annually by CITB and depend on the qualification and duration. The grant is paid to the employer, not to MPTT. MPTT issues the achievement documentation the CITB needs to release the grant. For Levy-registered employers running an NRSWA programme across a utility or civils workforce, the grant materially reduces the net cost. Always check current grant rates on the CITB website before budgeting.

Why we don’t publish a fixed price list

NRSWA pricing on the open web is rarely a like-for-like comparison. A ‘low’ headline price advertised by one provider may exclude the SQA assessment fee, the card application fee, or treat the practical assessment as a separate extra. The operator or employer ends up paying those separately. We quote one all-in figure for the course you actually need, after we have confirmed the unit list, the route, the group size and whether the delivery is on-site or at our centre. That removes the hidden-fee surprises common in this market.

What you get for the price at MPTT

Every NRSWA course MPTT delivers is run by SQA-registered instructors and assessors, on the actual unit material (CAT and Genny equipment for Unit 1; signage and traffic management kit for Unit 2; real reinstatement materials for Units 3 to 9). The price includes pre-course screening, the training, the SQA theory paper, the practical assessment, all course materials, the card application processing, and follow-up advice from our team. Backed by over 200 five-star Google reviews. MPTT has been delivering construction training since 1935.
