How long does NRSWA training take?

Question Answer

NRSWA course length depends on how many units the operative or supervisor is taking. A single unit (Cat & Genny, SLG) is typically 1 day. A full Operative course covering Units 1, 2 and the common reinstatement units runs 3–5 days. A Supervisor course runs 2–3 days. A 5-year renewal typically runs 1 day per unit, batched where possible.

Key facts

  • Single unit: typically 1 day, including theory and practical assessment.
  • Full Operative course (Units 1, 2, 3 + 1–2 reinstatement units): 3–5 days.
  • Supervisor course (S1, S2, S-equivalent reinstatement units, S10/S11): 2–3 days.
  • 5-year renewal: 1 day per unit, with batched scheduling for multiple units on the same attendance.
  • Combined courses (e.g. Supervisor Monitoring + SLG) can compress two units into a single day.

Why durations vary by unit and route

NRSWA unit duration is set by the assessment content the SQA Streetworks scheme defines for each unit. Some units (Cat & Genny, SLG) are tightly scoped to a single technical area and can be delivered in a single day. Others (reinstatement) cover material handling, layering, compaction and inspection across several material types and run to a longer practical assessment. The route the operative is on (new starter, top-up, renewal) is the second variable. New starters need the underpinning regulatory and HSG47 content as well as the practical drills; renewals condense that content because the candidate has already held the unit for five years.

Duration by route: single-unit courses

The two most-booked single-unit NRSWA courses are:

  • Unit 1 Cat & Genny. 1 day. Covers HSG47, the CAT and Genny operating modes, practical detection on the training rig, and the theory and practical assessment. See our Unit 1 FAQ for the full content breakdown.
  • Unit 2 Signing, Lighting and Guarding. 1 day. Covers Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual, layout for excavation in carriageways and footways, and the practical setting-out assessment. Standalone course at NRSWA Streetworks SLG (unit only).

Other single units (Unit 3 Excavation, Units 4–9 reinstatement, Unit 10 Site Inspection) are typically delivered as part of a multi-unit block rather than on a standalone day, because the practical assessment requires equipment and a working area best set up across the multi-day course.

Duration by route: full Operative course

The full NRSWA Streetworks for Operatives course covers Units 1, 2 and a typical selection of reinstatement units in a single block. Duration is 3–5 days depending on the units included:

  • 3-day block: Units 1, 2, 4 (or another single reinstatement unit). Suits operatives doing limited reinstatement (backfill only, working with a separate reinstatement crew).
  • 4-day block: Units 1, 2, 3, 6. Suits utility operatives doing excavation and bituminous reinstatement.
  • 5-day block: Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 (and optionally 8 or 9). Suits operatives covering excavation, backfill, bituminous reinstatement and a modular or cold-lay option. The most common full-Operative pattern.

All units are tested at the end of the relevant day or block. The card lists each unit individually.

Duration by route: Supervisor course

The NRSWA Streetworks Supervisor course runs 2–3 days for a typical supervisor unit set (S1, S2, S6, S10, S11). Supervisor units cover the same technical content as the Operative equivalents but are assessed at a level appropriate to a person signing off the work and dealing with the highway authority inspector. Most supervisors already hold the Operative-side units before stepping up; the Supervisor block focuses on the monitoring and inspection content rather than re-running the practical drills.

Duration by route: renewals

NRSWA Streetworks cards expire 5 years after issue. Renewals are by retest. A single-unit renewal is typically 1 day (a short refresh plus the theory and practical retest). For operators holding multiple units, renewals are batched where the SQA scheme allows, so a 3- or 4-unit holder typically attends 2–3 days rather than 1 per unit. Book renewals at least 6 weeks before expiry. Full detail in our card validity and renewal FAQ and the standalone NRSWA Streetworks refresher course.

Combined courses to compress duration

Where the SQA framework allows, MPTT runs combined courses to reduce the total attendance days for the employer. The most-booked example is the Supervisor Monitoring + SLG 1-day course, which combines two Supervisor unit assessments into a single attendance. Combined formats only work where the units are technically adjacent and the assessment day can be structured to cover both without rushing either; we will recommend a combined block where it suits the candidates.

Why we screen on enrolment

Operators and contractors both lose money on the wrong duration. A 5-day full-Operative booking when the operative only needs Units 1 and 2 means three lost site days. A 3-day book when the operative needs 5 units means a failed coverage and a re-book. We screen every candidate on enrolment so the duration matches the unit set actually needed. Send us the operative’s role and the work they do on site, and we will come back with a duration you can plan a programme around.

Related questions

Quick answers to related questions

How long is the Cat & Genny course?

Typically 1 day. Covers HSG47, the CAT and Genny operating modes, practical detection on a training rig, plus the theory and practical assessment. Card issued on the standard SQA processing timeline.

How long is the full NRSWA Operative course?

3–5 days, depending on how many units are included. A 5-day block typically covers Units 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, which is the most common operative pattern. Smaller blocks are available for operatives with a narrower scope of work.

How long is an NRSWA renewal?

1 day per unit, with batched scheduling where SQA rules allow. Operators holding 3–4 units typically retest across 2–3 days rather than 1 per unit.
