What NPORS categories (N-codes) are available?

Question Answer

NPORS covers around 80 plant categories in total, each identified by its own N-code. At MPTT we deliver training and testing across the full UK construction and civils range: excavators, telehandlers, dumpers, loading shovels, graders, dozers, road sweepers, lorry loaders, plus the full lifting and crane suite (slinger/signaller, mobile crane, crane supervisor) and specialist categories such as cable avoidance and excavation marshalling.

Key facts

  • NPORS has approximately 80 N-codes in total across the full plant and lifting catalogue.
  • N-codes are organised into families: plant operation, lifting and crane, road and surfacing, marshalling, specialist and streetworks.
  • MPTT delivers training and testing on 25+ of the most-demanded NPORS N-codes spanning all the major families.
  • A single operator can hold multiple N-codes. Each is tested and certified independently.
  • N-codes you do not see below may still be deliverable on request. Call 01543 899706.

How NPORS N-codes are structured

The NPORS N-code is the unique identifier for each plant category in the scheme. The letter “N” denotes an NPORS code. The parallel CPCS scheme uses an “A” prefix (see NPORS vs CPCS for the cross-reference). Most N-codes refer to a specific machine type. For example, N202 = 360° Excavator. Some carry additional parameters such as machine weight band or attachment specification. Knowing your N-code is the first step in booking the right course, because NPORS testing is per N-code. A card for one N-code does not authorise you to operate a different machine.

Don’t see your N-code?

The catalogue above covers the N-codes MPTT actively delivers. NPORS has additional codes that we can usually arrange on request, depending on candidate volume and instructor availability. Call 01543 899706 with the N-code you need and we will confirm.

Holding multiple N-codes

There is no limit on how many NPORS N-codes an operator can hold. Each is tested and certified independently, but all are recorded on the same operator profile with NPORS Limited and shown on the NPORS card. Operators working across mixed plant fleets typically hold three or four N-codes. Supervisors and managers often hold lifting-side codes (N402, N405) alongside an operator code or two. Renewals are per N-code and per five years, but can usually be batched at a single attendance to reduce downtime.

Quick answers to related questions

How many NPORS N-codes are there in total?

Approximately 80 N-codes across the full NPORS catalogue. MPTT actively delivers training and testing on 25+ of the most-demanded N-codes spanning all the major plant, lifting, marshalling and specialist families.

What does the N in N-code stand for?

The letter is a scheme prefix. NPORS uses “N”; the parallel CPCS scheme uses “A” (so the same machine has an N-code and an A-code).

Can I hold multiple NPORS N-codes on one card?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of N-codes an operator can hold. All passed N-codes are recorded on the same NPORS Limited operator profile and shown on the NPORS card.
