Course Purpose

This combined course enables learners to:

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of dumper and roller operators

• Carry out pre‑use checks and routine maintenance

• Operate both machines safely in a variety of site conditions

• Load, transport, and discharge materials using a dumper

• Compact materials to specification using a ride‑on roller

• Work safely around other plant, personnel, and site hazards

• Prepare for CPCS technical tests for A09 and A31

Course Structure

Training includes:

• Classroom-based theory sessions

• Practical, hands-on operation of both machines

• Instructor-led demonstrations

• Practice exercises simulating real site tasks

• CPCS test preparation

A09 Forward Tipping Dumper

• Pre-start checks and defect reporting

• Travelling with and without loads

• Safe loading and unloading procedures

• Working on gradients and rough terrain

• Discharging loads safely

• Understanding stability and centre of gravity

A31 Ride‑On Roller

• Pre-use inspections

• Setting up for compaction work

• Compacting different materials and surfaces

• Working safely near edges, trenches, and hazards

• Avoiding over-compaction and machine damage

• Shutdown and securing procedures

Core Theory for Both Machines

• Health & Safety at Work Act

• PUWER and LOLER regulations

• Site safety and communication

• Working around other plant and pedestrians

• Environmental considerations

Assessment & Certification

Delegates must complete:

• CPCS Theory Test (verbal questioning)

• CPCS Practical Test for each category

Successful candidates receive:

• CPCS Red Trained Operator Cards for A09 and A31

• Valid for 2 years, with progression to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card via NVQ
