What happens during the CPCS theory and practical test?
The CPCS theory test is a touch-screen, multiple-choice exam, specific to your A-code, lasting approximately 45 minutes. The CPCS practical test is an observed assessment on the actual machine, carried out by an NOCN Job Cards-registered Tester, typically lasting 1–4 hours. Both tests must be passed to be issued the Red Trained Operator card.
Key facts
- Theory test: ~45 minutes, touch-screen, multiple-choice, machine-specific. Result on the day.
- Practical test: 1–4 hours, on the actual machine, observed by an NOCN Tester. Result on the day.
- Both must be passed to receive the Red Trained Operator card.
- The tests are delivered at an NOCN-accredited test centre (MPTT is accredited).
- Bring photo ID and a current CITB HS&E test certificate where required for the A-code.
The CPCS theory test: format and content
The CPCS theory test is delivered on a touch-screen terminal at an NOCN-accredited test centre and takes approximately 45 minutes. The format is multiple-choice and the question pool is machine-specific. The test you sit for A17 Telescopic Handler is a different set of questions to the one for A40 Slinger/Signaller or A59 360° Excavator.
Question coverage typically includes:
- Safe operating procedures for the specific machine.
- Pre-use inspection and start-up checks.
- Hazard awareness: proximity hazards, overhead and underground services, working near pedestrians and other plant.
- Manufacturer’s data and lift charts (load-handling machines).
- Regulatory framework: the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, HSE guidance, LOLER and PUWER for lifting and work equipment, and BS 7121 for crane operations on lifting A-codes.
The pass mark is set by NOCN Job Cards. You receive your result at the end of the test.
The CPCS practical test: format and content
The CPCS practical test is an observed assessment on the actual machine you are testing on, carried out by an NOCN Job Cards-registered Tester. Practical test duration varies by A-code, typically 1–4 hours, with longer tests on more complex machines:
- Lighter plant (A09 forward-tipping dumper, A23 skidsteer, A31 ride-on roller): around 1–1.5 hours.
- Mid-range plant (A17 telehandler, A21 wheeled loading shovel, A33 agricultural tractor): around 2 hours.
- Higher-value plant (A58/A59 360° excavator, A56 articulated dump truck, A34 crawler tractor/dozer, A19 grader): around 2–4 hours.
- Lifting and supervision codes (A40 slinger/signaller, A60 mobile crane, A61 appointed person, A62 crane supervisor): durations vary by role. Slinger practicals are shorter; appointed person practicals can run 3–4 hours.
The Tester scores against the CPCS practical-test criteria published by NOCN Job Cards for that A-code: pre-use checks, controls, machine handling, working tasks, hazard responses and shutdown procedures. You receive your result on the day.
What you need to bring
- Photo ID: passport, driving licence or another government-issued photo ID. Without it the test will not run.
- A current CITB HS&E test certificate where required as a prerequisite to the practical test. We confirm at enrolment whether your A-code requires this.
- Appropriate PPE: safety boots, hi-vis, hard hat, gloves. We provide site PPE for the practical, but operators in their own well-fitted PPE typically perform better.
- A relaxed start. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the theory test start time so paperwork and any pre-test briefings can happen without rushing.
Common reasons for not passing, and how training prevents them
The theory test is most often failed by candidates who under-prepare on the machine-specific question pool, over-relying on general HS&E knowledge. Our training programme builds in dedicated theory revision against the actual question structure.
The practical test is most often failed by candidates who rush the pre-use inspection, skip walk-around hazard checks, or misjudge the working-task speed. Too fast becomes unsafe and uncontrolled; too slow leaves the task incomplete. The CPCS practical test is as much an assessment of process as of skill. The Tester is looking for safe, methodical, considered operation, not raw machine speed. Our instructors drill the test sequence with you during training so test-day behaviour is muscle memory.
After you pass
Once you have passed both tests, NOCN Job Cards processes the card centrally and posts the Red Trained Operator card to your home address within a few weeks. You can begin operating the machine on site as soon as you have passed. The printed card follows. The Red card is valid for two years. The recommended path is to use those two years to accumulate the site experience an NVQ assessor can verify and upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator card via a Plant Operations NVQ.
If you don’t pass on the day
A retest is bookable. Theory and practical retest rules are set by NOCN Job Cards and depend on which test was failed and whether the candidate failed components or the whole test. In most cases retests can be scheduled within a few weeks of the original test date. We will discuss the retest plan with you the same day if either test is not passed.

Quick answers to related questions
How long is the CPCS theory test?
Approximately 45 minutes. Touch-screen, multiple-choice, machine-specific. The pass mark is set by NOCN Job Cards. You receive your result at the end of the test.
How long is the CPCS practical test?
Typically 1–4 hours, depending on the A-code. Slinger/signaller practicals are at the shorter end; appointed person and 360° excavator practicals run longer.
Do I need the CITB HS&E test before my CPCS practical test?
For some A-codes, yes. We confirm at enrolment whether your category requires a current CITB HS&E test certificate as a practical-test prerequisite.
