The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the use of abrasive wheels.
 

Purpose/scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the following: 

Scope: 

• abrasive wheels used for: portable grinders, angle grinders, disc cutters  
• hazards, risks, and controls  
• markings and selection 
• storing handling, and transporting 
• inspecting and testing 
• components and functions 
• assembling and mounting 
• main abrasive wheels legislation 
• understanding cutting/grinding process 

Learning outcomes
The delegate will be able to:

• describe the hazards, risks, and controls for abrasive wheels (HSE-HSG17, SR21, CIS54)
• select an abrasive wheel to suit the material and task, using the markings
• store, handle, and transport abrasive wheels safely
• inspect and test abrasive wheels for damage and out-of-balance (HSE-HSG129)
• describe the names and functions of all the components of abrasive wheel assemblies such as: flanges, blotters, bushes, nuts, etc.
• assemble abrasive wheel units correctly to make sure they are balanced and safe to use
• identify suitable personal protective equipment (PPE), and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) required, such as rated eye protection (HSE website (External link - Opens in a new tab or window))
• Describe the methods of cutting/grinding

Duration
Half day of 3 learning hours.
