The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the use of abrasive wheels.

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the following:
Scope:
- abrasive wheels used for: portable grinders, angle grinders, disc cutters
- hazards, risks, and controls
- markings and selection
- storing handling, and transporting
- inspecting and testing
- components and functions
- assembling and mounting
- main abrasive wheels legislation
- understanding cutting/grinding process
Learning outcomes
The delegate will be able to:
- describe the hazards, risks, and controls for abrasive wheels (HSE-HSG17, SR21, CIS54)
- select an abrasive wheel to suit the material and task, using the markings
- store, handle, and transport abrasive wheels safely
- inspect and test abrasive wheels for damage and out-of-balance (HSE-HSG129)
- describe the names and functions of all the components of abrasive wheel assemblies such as: flanges, blotters, bushes, nuts, etc.
- assemble abrasive wheel units correctly to make sure they are balanced and safe to use
- identify suitable personal protective equipment (PPE), and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) required, such as rated eye protection (HSE website (External link - Opens in a new tab or window))
- Describe the methods of cutting/grinding

Half day of 3 learning hours.

Course Completion
